Asa Morton, MD, is a top-ranked oculofacial plastic surgeon with advanced training in ophthalmology and plastic surgery, offering facial rejuvenation services to patients at his offices in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, and Escondido, California. Dr. Morton brings his extensive training and experience in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery to Eye Care of San Diego, treating conditions that may change the appearance around the eyes as well as physical changes that may affect vision. Oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery is unique to other cosmetic surgeries in that Dr. Morton has extensive knowledge and experience in ophthalmology, which further provides peace of mind for the patient knowing that their vision will always be protected with an eyelid or facial procedure. Dr. Morton provides treatment for facial trauma, eyelid cancer, and thyroid eye disease, as well as botox, neck lifts, and chemical peels.
Dr. Morton grew up in San Diego and completed his undergraduate studies at Revelle College University of California San Diego. Before pursuing a career in medicine, he fulfilled his dream of flying carrier-based fighter jets and served as a Navy pilot for five years. Dr. Morton then went on to complete medical school and received his MD from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. While in medical school, he received various awards and recognitions, including the Surgeon General Award for academic excellence, medical professionalism, and leadership skills as well as selection to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, where he was elected as president.
Dr. Morton interned at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he also completed his residency in Ophthalmology. While completing his medical internship, he was chosen Intern of the Year. After completing his residency, Dr. Morton was assigned to the Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads, in Puerto Rico, where he directed the Ophthalmology Department. Following this tour of duty, he was selected for the highly competitive University of Michigan program, where he spent two years studying and operating with innovators in the field of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery of the eyelids, forehead, face, orbits, and lacrimal system.
Dr. Morton is honored to have served as the Director of Oculoplastics and Orbital Reconstruction at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, known then as the “President’s Hospital”, and then in the same position at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. For most of his military medical career, Dr. Morton was involved in complicated war-related facial injuries. These challenging cases created the foundation and skill set for the services he provides today. Community members and patients alike admire his 24 years of service in the Navy. He retired in 2003 and has been in private practice with Eye Care of San Diego since.
Beginning in 1988, he has participated in various humanitarian surgical missions and education programs all over the world. He currently delivers pro bono care with Helps International and Fresh Start Surgical Gifts. Dr. Morton is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has written numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters in the medical literature. Annually he continues to teach anatomy and surgical cadaver brow and facial reconstructive courses all over the world. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University.
