Filler Q & A

What are injectable dermal fillers?

Injectable dermal fillers are gel-like, volumizing substances injected beneath the skin that improve the appearance of wrinkles, lines, shallow contours, and certain scars. Fillers rejuvenate the patient’s facial fullness, providing a more youthful appearance and promoting the production of collagen to help the skin continue to appear firmer and more resilient over time. Fillers can also be used to add plumpness to thin lips. Most treatments take about a half hour or less and, once the treatment is complete, patients can go on with their everyday activities.

Patients who seek out Dr. Morton for filler injections will benefit from his extensive surgical training and understanding of the best techniques to rejuvenate a patient’s facial features. Dr. Morton uses some of the more popular fillers including Restylane®, Radiesse™, Hylaform®, juvederm, Voluma, and your own fat.

How long do the results last?

Precisely how long a dermal filler will last depends on the product, the treatment area, and the patient. Usually, the denser the filler material and the deeper Dr. Morton injects the filler, the longer it lasts. But that’s not always the case. Since many fillers are biocompatible, they will need to be replenished at some point. Most injectable fillers aren’t permanent but can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, sometimes longer. With the help of an experienced oculofacial surgeon like Dr. Morton, injectable fillers can give you with a more youthful appearance without the lengthy recovery time.

What types of side effects are associated with injectable dermal fillers?

Injectable fillers have very few side effects, with the most common occurring near the injection site. Patients should avoid rubbing the injection site to prevent spreading filler materials to other areas of the face, which can affect the final results. Some patients report side effects like:

  • Inflammation
  • Skin irritation
  • Redness
  • Itching
  • Tenderness

In general, side effects disappear within the first 2-3 days after the procedure. If you have any questions or concerns about filler injections, schedule a consultation with Dr. Morton.
